The Schools Engagement Programme

The Schools Engagement Programme brings together university students and secondary school students in local London communities.

The programme started in 2015, through a philanthropic partnership with The Portal Trust; a fundamental commitment by Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) to engage with communities in London, developing our students’ awareness of challenges in society and providing an education that is responsible, ethical and enhances employment prospects.

Coaching and mentoring

Undergraduate students join the programme through our Mentoring and Coaching for Leadership module, an elective option for:

The module is compulsory for BSc Business Management with Social Purpose students and is now being piloted in other Schools at City, University of London.

There are 2 pathway options available to our mentors:

  • School pathway: 2nd or 3rd year students mentor pupils aged 15 – 17 in local schools
  • University pathway: 2nd or 3rd year students mentor 1st year students at Bayes Business School.

Benefits of the programme

Being mentors and being mentored are hugely beneficial for the students and secondary school pupils involved in this programme. Being an effective communicator and influencer is increasingly valuable to employers, and these skills will enhance the future careers of our students.

Being part of this programme will help our graduates to stand out in the workplace. Mentoring and coaching provides students with:

  • Resilience
  • Adaptability
  • Empathy
  • A deeper understanding of the close integration between business and society
  • Help to make better decisions in their own working lives over the long term as more successful and responsible business leaders.

Programme report 2024

2023/24 marks the 8th year of running the programme. To celebrate this milestone we are proud to publish a report into the challenges and successes of establishing this unique initiative.

Boosting Aspiration Through Neer-Peer Mentoring on the Curriculum is an open look back at how we set up and developed a complex new module. The report provides insight into lessons learnt while offering practical recommendations on how this concept could be further scaled up both within and beyond our institution.
