New scholarship will tackle gender imbalance in shipping

A  vessel-leasing firm is funding a scholarship for a woman to study for prestigious Bayes MSc to address gender  imbalance in industry

A major containership owner, Global Ship Lease, is offering women the chance to secure a scholarship to a respected Bayes’ MSc course to help address the industry’s significant gender gap.

The Global Ship Lease Scholarship for Women in Shipping will cover the course fees for Bayes’ MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance.

Dr Ioannis Moutzouris, Onassis Senior Lecturer in Shipping Finance and Analytics at the Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance and Associate Dean for Engagement at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), said: “The sector is well aware that the under-representation of women in the industry is unsustainable. We are delighted that Global Ship Lease is working with us to challenge that by funding a scholarship dedicated to women in our MSc programme. Shipping is an exciting industry going through a period of both change and opportunity.

“However, only a quarter of the students in our current intake are women and that means there is a lot of untapped potential out there. Glass ceilings have been smashed in many other traditionally male-dominated industries and this is a small but important step towards shipping truly entering the 21st Century.”

Thomas Lister, Global Ship Lease Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are very proud to be sponsoring the Global Ship Lease Scholarship for Women in Shipping with Bayes Business School. Historically, shipping has been a male-dominated industry. Anything that can be done to support gender diversity will, by definition, expand the pool of talented people from which the industry can draw to tackle decarbonisation and other significant challenges in a rapidly changing world.

“We are delighted to build on our existing relationship with Bayes, with whom we are project partners on the UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub, and excited that our scholarship will be linked not only to Bayes’ highly-regarded Masters in Shipping, Trade & Finance, but also to their Women’s Leadership Programme.”

The Bayes Global Women’s Leadership Programme seeks to inspire, equip and connect women who are leaders or who want to become leaders.
