Crossing borders: A Lima engineer's MBA journey in London

From receiving a prestigious scholarship to navigating networking events and real-world applications, delve into Cayetano's story of growth, cultural exploration, and preparation for future endeavours.

After six years working as an Industrial Engineer at my family business in Lima, Peru, I recognised the need to build on my business knowledge and improve my negotiation and presentation skills. Witnessing my sister's transformative experience pursuing an MBA in the UK inspired me to follow in her footsteps. Having been immersed in English culture since childhood due to attending a British school, pursuing an MBA in the UK felt like a natural progression.

My decision to study at the Bayes Full-time MBA was also rooted in the promise of experiential learning, an international approach, and a close-knit community that fosters personalised experiences and deep friendships. My MBA experience started in mid-August 2023, marked by my relocation to London to settle into city life.

The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation Entrepreneurship Scholarship

I had the honour of receiving The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation Entrepreneurship Scholarship which has fuelled my academic discipline instilled in me a desire to contribute to a legacy of supporting entrepreneurs and philanthropic endeavours. This scholarship has empowered me to cultivate my networking skills while extending support to prospective MBA candidates considering Bayes.

Networking opportunities at Bayes

The MBA curriculum includes networking events facilitating interactions with alumni and special guest lecturers. At the winter networking Bayes Careers Beers event, I engaged in insightful conversations with alumni and faculty members, gaining valuable advice on navigating the MBA curriculum and exploring diverse career pathways, including consulting, and establishing a start-up in London.

Integration of learning with real-world application

Currently into block four, covering modules on corporate finance, social responsibility, and digital technologies, I've enjoyed numerous collaborative learning experiences. Through the three integration weeks with my team, I've applied interdisciplinary knowledge acquired in the past month of studies to real-life case studies, proposing actionable recommendations for improvement.

Similarly, International Consultancy Week in Portugal has given me the opportunity to work with a company to devise strategic business solutions. Forthcoming international electives in destinations such as the USA, South Korea, and Italy offer an exciting opportunity to apply newfound insights in diverse global contexts.

Balancing studies and social life

I make a continuous effort to balance my studies and social life. I cherish moments spent exploring London's cultural offerings with friends, whether attending the theatre, sampling international cuisine, or visiting renowned museums; my favourites are the Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, and London Docklands Museum. As a movie buff, I indulge in early screenings and red-carpet events where I can catch Hollywood stars.

With seven months remaining until I complete my MBA, my peers and I are deliberating summer internships, further European travels, and completing our Business Mastery Project (final project that applies everything taught in the programme). I don’t know what the future holds for me, but I know I will be leveraging London's dynamic landscape to expand my network and refine my interpersonal skills.
