Professor Barbara Casu appointed Bayes Deputy Dean

Professor of Banking and Finance to lead Business School’s faculty.

Professor Barbara Casu has been appointed as Deputy Dean, Faculty and Research at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass).

A renowned researcher and educator in the areas of banking and finance, and author of the globally acclaimed Introduction to Banking (Pearson FT), Professor Casu became Director of the School’s prestigious Centre for Banking Research in 2011. She has worked extensively with many of the world’s leading stakeholders in the sector to raise Bayes’ profile – including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Commission and the SWIFT Institute – as well as hosting major events with leaders in finance, such as the annual Mais Lecture.

Professor Casu was also appointed as Head of the Faculty of Finance in 2021.

In her new role, Professor Casu will work closely with academic colleagues to foster a successful culture of research excellence and recognition.

On her appointment, Professor Casu said:

“It is really exciting to be taking on the role of Deputy Dean at this time.

“Bayes faculty are globally renowned for impactful research across a range of key business disciplines. This was demonstrated in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), which placed us 5th in the UK for quality of research output, as well as major progression in other major rankings in the last year.

“As Deputy Dean I want to ensure we continue to attract, retain and develop the very best researchers in their field, and create the optimal environment for them to thrive – through provision of resources, recognition or peer support.”

Professor Casu joins the Bayes Senior Leadership Team as Professor Caroline Wiertz, former Deputy Dean, embarks on a period of sabbatical leave.

Professor Wiertz was appointed as Bayes Deputy Dean in the summer of 2021 with a focus on School branding and improving diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), having overseen the School’s name change from Cass to Bayes. During Professor Wiertz’ tenure, the School has introduced a number of new scholarship programmes to widen participation, rebuilt engagement activities and made significant strides in national, continental and global rankings.

Professor André Spicer, Dean of Bayes Business School, said:

“We are delighted to confirm Professor Casu’s appointment to the Bayes Deanery.

“Aside from her wealth of knowledge and experience within the banking and finance research community, Professor Casu brings demonstrable faculty leadership qualities to the role as we strive to recruit and retain the very best academic talent while nurturing a culture that further enhances the quality of our research and teaching.

“I am hugely thankful to the enormous contribution that Professor Wiertz has made in her time as Deputy Dean and the positive impact she has had on the School, and we look forward to seeing the next developments in her research.”
