Course: BSc Actuarial Science
Why did you decide to apply to study at the Business School (formerly Cass)?
I always knew I wanted to study in a London University (as far away from home as possible without leaving the country). After doing some research around the BSc Actuarial Science courses available, I decided City would be the best as it is highly ranked. It also had lecturers who were qualified Actuaries previously so had first-hand experience.
What were the most important resources for you in helping you to make a decision?
For me, the student room was a massive help, there were a lot of people talking at the same level, asking similar questions to me and most of them were answered. Applicant/Open Days were also helpful as it gave a feel for the environment you’d be studying in for the next three years.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City, University of London?
My favourite thing about studying at City is the support and help that you get from people on your course. Everyone is basically in the same boat and most students are really friendly and willing to help.
What kind of things are you involved in outside of your course?
Outside of my course, I am the Events Co-ordinator for the Society of Actuaries. We organise many events for students of all years on our course and even those on different courses are welcome. I have also been a part of Pakistan Society and performed dance routines at charity dinners. Joining societies is a really fun way of making new friends and having a separate life outside of your course. As well as this I am a Student Ambassador for the University so I help out at Open and Applicant days, I go to Higher Education fairs at Schools and Sixth forms and occasionally help out at graduation ceremonies too! This is really fantastic because it helps bring in a small income whenever you need that extra cash.
Have you had the opportunity to do any placements as part of your course?
Internships and placements are a really big deal in my course and I am currently in the process of applying to lots of different companies. Advice for future students who want to apply to this course is to make sure your CV is constantly up to scratch with relevant work experience, extra-curricular activities and a good format. This will really help you out when you need to apply too.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
After graduation, I plan to work in a company as an Actuary and complete all my professional examinations. I’d love to travel a lot too so I’d like to fit that in to an anticipated busy schedule.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
Work extremely hard now, and reap the benefits later.
