Umadevi Dassaye

Course: BSc Actuarial Science

What were you doing before you came to study at City?

I studied for my A-levels at Queen Elizabeth College in Mauritius. I also did an internship at an insurance company for one month.

Why did you decide to apply to study at City, University of London?

I wanted a career as an actuary and the Business School (formerly Cass) is one of the best institutions to study Actuarial Science. The course has accreditation from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and offers the opportunity to work for one year in industry. I also wanted to experience living and studying abroad.

What is your favourite thing about studying at City?

One of my favourite things about studying at the Business School is that you are taught by professors who have real-life experience as actuaries. Interacting with people from different backgrounds is also amazing as you get to know different cultures.

What kind of things are you involved in outside of your course?

I work part-time with renowned researchers at the Business School’s Strategy Insight Lab to better understand startups and SMEs. I also work as an Academic Representation Intern at the Students' Union. Moreover, I am also working on a business idea with other City students, which has won entrepreneurship competitions such as CitySparks.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I did a placement at UBS Asset Management last year and I was offered to come back when I graduate. I will be joining their investment team in the summer.

What would be your top tip for our applicants?

Be genuine in what you write and what you do. Do your research about the institution before applying and you will be fine.
