Gain a comprehensive understanding of the social responsibilities of a modern business organisation. This module provides a framework to address the complex issues of responsibility and sustainability in a systematic way
The purpose of this module is to examine how corporations and managers can respond to these challenges. Among the issues to be addressed are:
- What are the main approaches to understanding companies’ responsibilities?
- For which social impacts (if any) should companies be held responsible?
- How can companies learn to anticipate and better manage challenges to their social, environmental and ethical performance?
- How can managers and entrepreneurs develop more inclusive or sustainable business models?
- What are the central challenges to better Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) measurement, accountability and investing?
Corporate Finance
Block 4: Knowledge and Policy
You’ll examine long-term financial decisions taken by companies. Beginning by defining the various financial instruments which firms use in their long-term financing and then addressing questions such as: How to compute the cost of capital, how debt and equity are issued; how much debt should a company use; does dividend policy matter; and why mergers and acquisitions occur. You’ll also look at corporate control as operations of financial institutions in monitoring and controlling corporations are considered to be as important as their function in funding.
Digital Technologies and Business Innovation
Block 4: Knowledge and Policy
You'll explore the impact of new powerful digital technologies on the way businesses are organised and compete.
A combination of lectures, case discussions and Special Interest Groups in which participants research emerging topics and demonstrate how they will impact industries and the organisations operating in them in the near future.
Integration week
Integration week
At the end of each block there is an integration week, during which you can draw on the knowledge you have gained to tackle a complex real-word business challenge.
Unique to Bayes MBA, each integration week represents an excellent opportunity to apply multi-disciplinary thinking and build your experience of solving genuine business problems.
Professional development
Achieving your potential
Experiential learning is the process of making meaning from direct experience, and this week is dedicated to active experimentation and reflective observation.
The main event is held off campus away from a typical working or study environment. Over the course of this week you will participate in a range of practical activities and challenging ‘learning metaphors’ used as a starting point to discuss skill traits, individual development themes and receive feedback from trained facilitators and cohort peers.
You'll explore leadership styles, learn to create followership, examine examples of effective communication in challenging team contexts and develop deeper insight regarding mental toughness and resilience.
International consultancy week
The International Consultancy Week is an opportunity for you to carry out a consultancy assignment with a specific company based in a different country. There will be a range of companies to select from, varying from start-ups to large organisations covering a range of different industries. Previous destinations have included Ireland, Iceland and Poland.
The projects typically focus on developing solutions for business development strategies, marketing, HR, finance or operational challenges. Throughout the data collection and analysis stages, you will have the opportunity to test your MBA learning in the real world by applying it to real business problems, as well as reflect on your own skills as a consultant, leader and team player in a new market, complex economic context and culture.
You have one week to work with the company face-to-face and then have a further four weeks to provide a full set of recommendations to the company which is assessed.
Consultancy trips to emerging markets were offered for the first time in 2003 and have become a significant component of our core curriculum.
Projects
Strategy consulting project
Gain practical experience of gathering information and performing strategic analysis on a company that is currently operating in the UK over a three month period. You are required to work effectively as a team enacting the role of directors, senior managers and strategy consultants.
You will apply MBA learnings from your core subjects, test management theories and use your own insights from previous professional experience in the context of working with a real company.
“The Strategy Project is a collaborative assignment where your team consult for a business client’s senior management on a real strategic challenge such as how to expand internationally or embrace digital transformation. This culminates in a presentation to the client where analytical and problem-solving skills are tested before planning and implementation of effective strategies are called for.
Dr Alessandro Giudici, Reader in Strategy
Some previous tasks that our Full-time MBA students completed while undertaking their strategy project:
- Mapping market sizes and values, identifying client needs and then building a recommendation for a new product and revenue stream
- Conduct a strategic market analysis, exploring potential markets, the competitive landscape and potential value chain
- Provide potential targets to help achieve long term growth
- Review the company’s business context and competitive positioning
- Recommend innovative ideas to solve a buyer-seller relationship
- Present critical insights such as revenue forecasting models to the company, including key-stakeholders
- Conduct several meetings with the MD, Chairman and senior managers.
Business Mastery Project
This is a major piece of self-managed business consultancy which counts substantially towards your final degree mark.
This is your opportunity to engage directly with an organisation to define a real world business question or challenge, and then to analyse, evaluate and recommend solutions. This can support you to develop your profile within an organisation or in industry sectors of interest, and to develop an authoritative voice on a crucial business topic. It is an excellent way to deepen expertise, create new networks and career opportunities.
You can either source your own project or select a project offered by companies via the Careers and Professional Development Centre. Taking place over the summer, the project can be centred around a summer internship. Sponsoring companies often use this opportunity to road-test new talent, while you can use this as a platform to consolidate your experience in a particular field which adds value to your CV and could lead to your next career move.
Previous BMPs have tackled a variety of business problems across a wide range of commercial, industrial, public sector and not for profit organisations around the world.
Electives
The MBA at Bayes has a flexible approach to learning to help you achieve your career goals. You can choose to study a wide range of electives or focus on a concentration in one specific area.
You can choose from across our Full-time and Executive MBA portfolio of classes; some electives will run in the evenings and over weekends rather than during the day.
