Programme summary

The Executive Master's in Medical Leadership (EMML) is a specialised degree that offers advanced leadership training to doctors. The programme develops leaders who can transform healthcare systems in ways that ultimately help people live longer, healthier lives. Grounded in research that shows that medical leadership improves healthcare system performance, this degree is distinct in targeting doctors. We have structured it in a way to fit into your busy schedule as a doctor, by offering the degree on a part-time, flexible basis.

Our degree will enable you to realise the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management’s Leadership and Management Standards for Medical Professionals. A key feature of our programme is its dual focus on personal development and research-based conceptual knowledge. The aim is to combine master's-level learning about people, innovation and change in healthcare with your own development as an effective leader in this environment. In doing so, we will be drawing on the Business School’s world-class research capabilities and experience of executive development.

Business School-HCA Chief Medical Officer Clinical Management Fellowship

Bayes Business School has worked together with HCA Healthcare UK to create the Chief Medical Officer Clinical Management Fellowship programme. The fellowship aims to give ambitious doctors the skills, experiences and education to put them on the path to becoming the nation's future healthcare leaders. The fellowship offers 8 promising doctors the opportunity to gain practical experience of clinical management at HCA's acute complex care hospitals alongside the education that will equip with them skills and knowledge in leadership. HCA offers a full-time, 2 year fixed term employed Clinical Fellowship contract and full funding for the Executive Master's.

Business School scholarships for consultants

Bayes Business School offers three scholarships a year to suitable applicants to the Executive Master's in Medical Leadership (EMML). The scholarships cover just less than 50% of all fees for the degree. They are open to self-funded candidates (i.e. your tuition fees are not being paid by anyone other than yourself) who have clear professional merit and can demonstrate their potential to contribute to all aspects of the EMML.

Programme benefits

Personal leadership development – You will develop reflective awareness of your own leadership and management style, strengths and weaknesses. This personal development focus is built into our curriculum. You will learn how to negotiate successfully, manage conflict and difficult conversations.  You will have regular sessions with an experienced executive coach who will work with you to recognise and meet the leadership and managerial challenges you face.

Conceptual knowledge – You will be introduced to conceptual knowledge that will be critical to your development as manager and leader. This includes contextual knowledge (e.g. regulation and policy) that will allow you to engage with and transform health systems; people management skills (e.g. teams, managing culture, decision-making, negotiations) that will help you effectively mobilise support from others; and analytical knowledge (e.g. managerial accounting, health care analytics) that will give you practical tools that you need to identify, communicate, and achieve improvements in your own organisation.

A practical emphasis – Our emphasis on experiential learning will help you translate the conceptual knowledge into practical application. The programme is designed around exercises, cases, simulations, action learning sets and other experiential tools.

An impact project – As part of the programme you will complete a leadership impact project that enables you to synthesise what you have learned and apply it in your career.  You will lead and implement a change project in a host healthcare organisation. The specific task will be negotiated with the participating institution, which could be your own or another organisation. The project will give you the chance to lead a major change initiative with the support of a structured learning community including an academic mentor and/or peer.

Programme structure

The programme is designed and structured to allow for intellectual progression through core modules taught over a two year period. You will attend one two-day block session (on a Friday and Saturday) each month during the academic year (September through June). Additionally, you will have the opportunity to attend social and networking events where you can engage with the larger community of Bayes alumni and friends in healthcare.

Participant profile

Unlike most management degrees in healthcare, our programme has been designed specifically for doctors. Participants will include: medical directors, associate directors, clinical directors and clinical leads; consultants and general practitioners; senior clinical academics and clinician scientists; other senior medical professionals with appropriate experience; senior doctors in training with extensive clinical experience.

Faculty and Team biographies

Natasha Maw

Natasha is Programme Director of Leadership Development and Coaching and teaches the Personal Leadership Development module that underpins the degree. She works with students in her capacity as lead executive coach and action learning facilitator. Her background is in programme making at the BBC and she has since worked in many organisations establishing their coaching and leadership development schemes to help experts become leaders. She is a trained mediator and facilitator, qualified as an NLP Master Practitioner and a member of the Association for Coaching.

Ruth Velenski

Ruth is Head of Corporate Development within the Business School and is responsible for developing and managing corporate sponsorships and corporate partnerships between the Business School and a range of companies.

Previously she was Head of Campaigns with responsibility for identifying, designing and implementing fundraising initiatives to support key academic centres across the business school.

Since 2017 Ruth has been playing a significant role in helping to promote and attract doctors to the Executive Master’s in Medical Leadership (EMML) from across both the NHS and Private Health Care sectors and has established a number of significant partnerships in this respect.

Dr Amanda Goodall

Amanda’s research into expert leadership looks at the relationship between leadership, organisational performance, and employee job satisfaction. She examines leadership in a number of settings, but is particularly focused on clinical and medical leadership. She publishes in academic journals and practitioner publications, and is often featured in the media.

Victoria Oriade

Victoria is a Programme Manager in the Executive Education department and works to ensure the successful and high quality delivery of custom, open and accredited programmes. Victoria provides the students on the Executive Master’s in Medical Leadership programme with support and guidance throughout the duration of their studies and works closely with the Course Director and academic teaching staff on the programme.
