Bayes professor boards shipping power list

Bayes Professor Costas Grammenos has been named in Lloyd's List's power pyramid of the shipping industry's most influential people

The founder of Bayes Business School’s world-leading shipping, trade and finance centre is among Lloyd’s List’s Top 100 people in the sector.

The publication described Professor Costas Grammenos as “the influencer’s influencer” and said “…he has guided and educated the most successful executives across the shipping industry for decades”.

The Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance at Bayes was renamed to salute its founder in 2007, having previously been known as the International Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance, since opening in 1983.

The industry bible said: “There are multiple generations of shipping industry leaders with one common thread running through an otherwise diverse, international crowd that have worked in very different businesses over the years.

“The name ‘Grammenos’ is the link that draws them all together. It is the brand name of educational excellence in shipping that is worn discreetly, but proudly. It is a name that opens doors for those who have it on their CV.

“This year, Grammenos is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance. While others have joined him over the years, and the educational team at the Bayes Business School are world-class in their own right, it is still the professor who is the guiding light and mentor to future leaders.

“For the past 40 years, he has been shaping generations of the sharpest minds in the industry and there are very few boardrooms in the shipping world that don’t have at least one Grammenos alumni making the most difficult decisions.”

Professor Grammenos said: "I am delighted with my inclusion in the Lloyd's List's Top 100 People. My gratitude goes to my academic and administrative colleagues at the Centre, to Bayes Business School, to City St George’s, University of London, to our graduates, students and friends and to my wife and son. Everything we created was based on new ideas, hard work, dedication, friendship, trust and meritocracy.”

Diverse list

The 2024 list is headed by Arsenio Dominguez, General Secretary of the International Maritime Organization, with a surprise entry in at number two: the Houthis’ military spokesperson, Yahya Sare'e – reflecting the disruption to global trade of the Yemen-based movement’s attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

A graduate of the shipping centre, Dr Nikolas Tsakos, also made the list.
