Bayes academics earn new titles

Business School announces a new raft of academic promotions.

Bayes Business School is delighted to announce new titles for a number of academic experts in City St George's, University of London's latest promotions round.

Colleagues have been recognised for impactful and prolific research, as well as teaching excellence and enhancement of the student experience.

Promoted to Professor

Professor John Forth, Professor of Human Resource Management

Professor Forth’s work investigates links between management practices, job quality and productivity. He has co-authored several books and papers on British employment relations, with recent research focusing on issues of wage inequality and low pay.

Professor Alessandro Giudici, Professor of Strategy

Professor Guidici’s research focuses on the orchestration of innovation within entrepreneurial ecosystems, with an emphasis on digitally enabled and socially oriented initiatives, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently the Subject Leader for the Strategy Group, as well as an elected Senator and AGN Committee member of City, St George’s Senate.

Professor Giudici is also a Freeman of the City of London, as a member of the Company of Communicators.

Professor Canan Kocabasoglu Hillmer, Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management

Professor Kocabasoglu Hillmer’s research is in supply chain management. Her work focuses on how effective supplier relationship management can improve operational performance, as well as how the changes the structure of a firm’s larger supply chain network can impact operational performance. She was the founding Director of the Bayes Global Women’s Leadership Programme (GWLP) and is currently a member of City St. George’s Shadow Leadership Board.

Professor Janina Steinmetz, Professor of Marketing

Professor Steinmetz’s research investigates how the presence of others influences the way consumers pursue their goals and find motivation. She is also a very active PhD student supervisor and enjoys communicating science to the general public – including media works and her blog series with Psychology Today.

Professor Steinmetz has also been Director of the Global Women’s Leadership Programme since 2021.

Professor Francisco Urzua, Professor of Corporate Finance

Professor Urzua is an expert in empirical corporate finance.

He is a highly prolific academic and regularly publishes in top academic journals. He is also a member of the academic advisory board of the UK Endorsement Board, the government body responsible for shaping accounting standards for UK firms while influencing future standards globally through dialogue with the IASB.

Promoted to Reader

Dr Cormac Bryce, Reader in Insurance

Dr Bryce is a risk management scholar, passionate about bridging the gap between theory and application in a range of industries – from elite sports and maritime transportation through to insurance and banking.

As Course Director of MSc Insurance & Risk Management, he has led the programme to ‘Global Centre for Insurance Excellence’ status from the International Insurance Society – the only course in the UK to achieve this. He has also created a new programme in the process –the MSc Corporate Risk Management – which highlights his ability to innovate the Bayes postgraduate portfolio offering.

Dr Lauren McCarthy, Reader in Corporate Social Responsibility

Dr McCarthy explores misogyny in organisational settings, and has worked alongside the insurance industry and higher education institutions to develop toolkits. Her research on female garment workers in Cambodia has had scholarly impact, with policy work to make the case for tighter supply chain regulation.

Promoted to Associate Professor

Dr Li Xue Cunningham, Associate Professor in Management

Dr Cunningham leads curriculum and educational development of the undegraduate Business Management cluster, the largest programme at City St George’s and Bayes. In the last three years, she modified the final year programme to introduce 12 new modules, redesigned pathways, developed Applied Business Projects (ABPs) and extended industry ties with leading employers, such as the Bank of England, BNP Paribas, Department of Education.

Dr Cunningham has also led several initiatives, such as a Virtual Community for students, the Professional Code of Conduct, and eight student-centred events across six degrees and three stages throughout the entire academic year.

Dr Malvina Marchese, Associate Professor in Data Science

Dr Marchese is an expert in financial forecasting of commodity markets, and is Director of the International Institute of Forecasters.

She has been Course Director of the undergraduate Finance cluster, which includes the Banking and International Finance (BIF), Investment and Financial Risk Management (IFRM) and Finance (Fin) degrees. In this role, she has been instrumental in enhancing the student experience which has led to notable improvements of the cluster in the National Student Survey (NSS), as well as in all major universities league tables.

Alex Moss, Associate Professor in Real Estate

Alex Moss is the Director of the Real Estate Research Centre, a Centre of Excellence at Bayes and home of the bi-annual Commercial Real Estate Lending Report. Alex has also recently published the textbook Global Real Estate Capital Markets: Theory and Practice which is a core textbook for real estate modules at all levels.
