Professor Vasso Ioannidou appointed Associate Dean for Research at Bayes

Professor of Finance to lead Business School’s cutting-edge research.

Professor Vasso Ioannidou has been appointed as the new Associate Dean for Research at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass).

Professor Ioannidou joined Bayes in January 2021 as Professor of Finance. She takes over from Professor Bobby Banerjee ahead of the new academic year, and will oversee the continued development of academic research.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), 92 per cent of Bayes’ research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent (4* or 3*), a result which Professor Ioannidou said she was keen to build on during her tenure.

“I am very happy to take on the position from such a position of strength, following our performance in REF2021 and the recent Shanghai Ranking,” she said.

“I hope to enhance the processes and structures that we have in place so we can continue providing an effective environment for producing excellent and impactful research.

“Since joining Bayes 18 months ago I’ve been impressed by the vibrant and collegiate atmosphere here, which I feel is very important in any successful academic setting.

At a time of global economic challenges facing the business world, Professor Ioannidou outlined how she believes high quality independent research can help policymakers and the business community by providing analytical frameworks and evidence-based guidance.

“In my role as Associate Dean for Research I firstly want to help grow the quality and intensity of our research further – striving for every one of our research outputs to be ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent.

“Secondly, we mustfocus research on important emerging issues facing businesses and society. This may include identifying new strategic research areas. Moving forwards, I expect research around digitalisation and sustainability becoming more important and offering opportunities for interdisciplinary research and cross-faculty collaborations.

“Thirdly, it is vital we enhance knowledge exchange, and maximise the impact of our research through collaborations with businesses and the public sector.

“As an economist, I strongly believe in lean structures and designs that are compatible with incentives.”

“To achieve these goals, it is therefore important to deploy resources strategically and leverage our strengths to grow. This includes being able to attract, develop, and retain top talent and increase research funding in areas of core strength.

“I look forward to contributing towards the development of research here at Bayes.”

Professor Ioannidou’s own research focusses on the intersection of banking, corporate finance, and monetary economics. She is a member of the Centre for Banking Research, which hosts the prestigious annual Mais Lecture
