Outlook for M&A in 2020
Panel of industry experts discuss future trends in M&A at Cass
The M&A Research Centre (MARC) at Cass Business School was pleased to host its tenth annual Outlook for M&A in 2020 panel discussion on Monday 27th January.
Professor Scott Moeller, Director of MARC, delivered a welcome address to over 125 students, alumni and industry practioners ahead of the panel discussion which was chaired by Alan Giles OBE, Deputy Chair of the M&A Research Centre Advisory Board.
Mr Giles was joined by panellists from of some of the Centre’s sponsors including: Cyril Auger, Director, Ardian; Stephen Postill, Head of UK Pensions and Employee Benefits M&A Group, Willis Towers Watson; David Petrie, Head of Corporate Finance, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW); John West, Managing Editor, EMEA, Mergermarket; and Philip Whitchelo, Vice President, Strategic Business Development, Intralinks.Dr Valeriya Vitkova, Research Fellow at MARC, also joined the panel.
The panel reviewed the 2019 market and discussed the effect of the likely global economic slowdown on deals in 2020. They also considered the impact of increased regulatory scrutiny in Europe, the opportunities for private equity and the role of governments and regulators in M&A.
Panel member Dr Valeriya Vitkova also discussed her research into the evolution of shareholder activism which she said would be a key trend in 2020. The panel also fielded a number of questions about the market from the audience.
Mr Giles said he was pleased to chair the panel.
