About
Overview
Stefan's research and teaching falls broadly into three streams of work at the moment:
1) Strategy and Business models: our work at Bayes includes the creation of the businessmodelzoo.com website for executive education and empirical and conceptual research centring on the management of business model portfolios as one form of diversification in corporate strategy. Collaborators at Bayes include Charles Baden-Fuller, Paolo Aversa, Santi Furnari, and Laure Cabantous.
2) Organisation theory and regulation: the current projects build on the 2018 ISR publication and the social practice work on motivation (MISQ 2012) that investigate how technology changes individual and collective behaviour and structures work environments. Current work includes empirical studies of the implementation of information systems as a regulatory process and the emergence of a new compliance function in large investment banks. Collaborators around Europe and the US include François-Xavier de Vaujany, Kalle Lyytinen, Boukje Cnossen, and Wlad Fomin.
3) Open strategy and open innovation: current working papers shed light on ways of collaboration inside and outside of firms and build on insights from earlier studies in open source software development. Over the last ten years, Stefan's research has appeared in journals such as Organization Studies, Information Systems Research, Research Policy, MIS Quarterly, Long Range Planning, Journal of Information Systems and more.
Prior to joining Bayes Business School Stefan worked as a researcher at ETH Zurich where he is currently affiliated as a faculty member at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics. He received a master's degree in financial economics and a PhD in management science from the University of St.Gallen in Switzerland. Stefan held visiting positions at Università degli Studi di Trento, MIT, Hitotsubashi and Politecnico di Milano.
Current work with executives focuses on business model change and the role business models play in shaping the purpose of the firm and the bigger challenges around sustainability, corporate strategy, and the motivation of stakeholders to support and grow the business. Understanding work practices is rooted in deeper meaning of work and values that drive the social practices needed to excel in a specific business or profession. The inner work on ourselves and the connection to others at work are fundamental ingredients to a successful transformation and sustainable growth.
