Coronavirus (COVID-19) – guidance for staff, students and visitors

The health and wellbeing of our students and staff remains our top priority. While we hope we will be able to offer full face-to-face tuition from September 2021, we would like to assure applicants that we will be prepared for online/blended teaching should the situation with the pandemic persist.

2020/21 academic year

We know students will have questions about their studies in the Autumn term, and would like to assure you that Bayes remains committed to delivering your studies in the 2020/21 academic year.

For the start of the next academic year we have adopted a hybrid approach to teaching on our programmes. This hybrid model is a combination of high-quality online learning with additional face-to-face sessions, where possible.

The decision to adopt this approach has been driven by our concerns for student and staff safety and also by our desire to ensure that both students who can travel to Bayes and students who cannot travel to Bayes to attend in person are both delivered a high-quality learning experience.

Working together to keep our community safe

City has put safety measures in place to gradually welcome our students and staff back to campus.

Please make sure you read the new safety measures City is implementing to help ensure social-distancing and hygiene guidelines are followed. All members of City’s community will need to work together to keep each other safe when on campus.

If you are returning to campus, you will see new signage throughout the Business School detailing the safety measures that we have put in place – as well as the key actions that we’re asking all students, staff and visitors to adopt in order to keep themselves and each other safe.

Information for new and continuing students

The details of our approach to 2020-21 are as follows;

  • Degree programmes are defined by their learning outcomes and these will be not be any different in 2020-21 than they were in previous years. Thus, our programmes will deliver the same knowledge, skills and values which were advertised to you when you enrolled.

Term 1:

In term 1 of the 2020-21 academic year, the programme will be delivered to you in hybrid form rather than entirely face-to-face. For the majority of modules, the content will be delivered via;

  • Weekly video lectures. These are pre-recorded and students may work through them in their own time and at their own pace. These video lectures replace traditional large-group teaching which is infeasible and undesirable due to Covid-19 and the safety measures it requires us to adopt.
  • At least one hour of live, interactive learning per module:
    • For those of you who can attend campus, where possible, this might take the form of face-to-face tutorial sessions led by Bayes teaching staff.
    • Alternatively, there will be online interactive sessions led by a member of Bayes teaching staff, for those students not on campus.

Our goal is to ensure that those students who are able to attend campus and those who are not cover the same material at the same pace.

  • Note that some modules might not operate in the way described above. For example, in some modules the live, online content may be for much more than 1 hour per week and for some it might not be possible to deliver any face-to-face tutorials (e.g due to Health and Safety reasons).
  • Assessments for term 1 modules will not require students to be on campus, these will be redesigned so that they can be taken remotely.

Term 2:

  • As yet, no firm decision has been made regarding the manner in which term 2 modules will be delivered in the 2020-21 academic year. This is due to the uncertainty regarding the progress of the Covid-19 pandemic and its continuing impact on the UK and elsewhere. However, if there are still substantial safety concerns for students and staff from face-to-face teaching, we will deliver term 2 modules in the same way as in term 1.

We would also like to reassure you that work is currently being carried out to ensure that all of our buildings and facilities provide a safe working and learning environment for staff and students with appropriate measures being put in place to ensure social distancing.

Finally, we are keenly aware that university life is not simply about learning. It is about being a member of a community of students and staff and enjoying the benefits that this brings. This will, of course, be challenging in the year ahead as we will all have to comply with safety measures, including social distancing.

However, we remain fully committed to our face-to-face community-building activities and we will deliver alternatives that students who are not on campus can participate in to ensure that they feel part of the Bayes community. Students who are not on campus will also have online access to all of City’s wider student services.

Is Bayes still considering applications?

Yes, we will continue to give equal consideration to all applications regardless of where you are from or where you live. Please note there may be some impact on how quickly we are able to make decisions.

For undergraduate applications please submit a UCAS application at by 30th June.  It is possible that we will continue to accept applications after this date but we encourage you to apply by this deadline.

For postgraduate applications the deadlines for accepting application are published on our MSc and MBA webpages, they are constantly under the review and might be extended to accommodate any late applications.

Will the outbreak affect my application?

We are doing everything we can to assist our applicants and guide them through the application process.

Our Admissions teams are working hard to process all applications and provide decisions as soon as possible to all applicants. Please note that the speed of our decision making may be slightly slower than normal, as we balance the wellbeing and support of our colleagues with the level of applications and enquiries we receive.

I want to make an application but my current studies are affected

We understand that the present situation with COVID-19 is likely to have an impact on applicants from a variety of countries, in many different ways. We are doing everything possible to assist affected applicants and offer them the best possible solution.

We expect extenuating circumstances to be taken into account by the relevant examination boards and examination bodies - in the case of postgraduate students, that would typically be your host institution.

What happens to the current deadlines within my offer?

We would ask you to adhere to the deadlines stated in your offer and inform us immediately should you anticipate any difficulties meeting them. We will be able to advise you if the deadlines could be reviewed and guide you accordingly.

The deadline for accepting your offer might be extended and this decision will be made on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions Panel. Any extension is likely to be for a maximum of two weeks. Please contact your Admissions Team for further information.

Can I defer my place to the next intake?

Deferral of your place to the next intake is at the discretion of the Admissions Panel and you will be ask to provide reasons for deferral when submitting your request.

If I’m no longer able to take my place due to the impact of COVID-19, will I be able to get a refund of any deposit that I have paid?

Requests for deposit refund will be considered on a case-by-case basis and where there are mitigating or extreme circumstances that have caused you to no longer be able to attend your course.  If you have further questions, please contact your Admissions Team clearly stating your student number and the reasons for your request.
